Line editing for book and journal manuscripts

For this service, I edit for line-level stylistic clarity, grammatical consistency, narrative flow, and organization and presentation of ideas. A line edit is appropriate if your manuscript is already where you want it to be at a big-picture level; at this stage, I ensure that your writing is as powerful as your ideas. I take particular care to assess the alignment of prose style with intended audience. To that end—in addition to editing the text directly—I often pose questions in the margin of the manuscript to encourage you to rethink or clarify language that may not resonate with the constituencies you seek to reach.

A further note on this service: line editing can be differentiated from (but often overlaps with) mechanical editing, which includes adherence to appropriate style guides. While this is not a service that I offer, I would be happy to refer you to someone who does this work.
